An extensive strip of territory, on the southern border of New Mexico, called La Mesilla. The Americans claimed that it belonged to the State of New Mexico and that it was essential for them to build a railway. Santa Anna sold it for a paltry sum and signed the shameful treaty for its transfer on May 31, 1854 |
